Talking with a common Ljubljana guy, this district is the first place he is going to invite you to; an area mainly crowded by young people.
Located at about 15 minutes walking from the old town, going through the street called Trubarjeva, at the crossroads, let’s go on the left entering the street called Metelkova Ulica.
“Avtonomni Kulturni center Metelkova mesto”, is the full name of the area which Metelkova Ulica is the main street.
From 1993 it has been a cultural centre. It’s a peculiar district where an independent club of artists and intellectuals, formed by more or less two hundreds volunteers occupied the places so that it could not be tear down.
Thus, the Austro-Hungarians ex-barracks have been turned into buildings embellished by Slovenian artists – famous or no- that have influenced their story. This renovation gave a youth and offbeat look to the quarter.
At any time of the day or during the night, concerts, parties with DJ, exhibitions and festivals follow one another. You can walk through it and choose between all the different saloons according to your music style.
Where to eat
Not far from Metilkova, walking for 5 minutes, you’ll reach “Bohoriceva ulica” where you can find “Saraj Restavracija” a restaurant opened since 2012. There you can enjoy delicious Bosnian meals.
The space is warm and extremely accurate, nothing is left behind randomly. In addition to the standard chairs, you’ll find comfortable sofa and three different halls where you could eat.
The Stewarts are friendly and they’re available for any advice on dishes. And more, they are fluent in English.
The dishes’ contents are too much and the price is affordable.
As hot dish, I suggest you the “Bosnian Pot”, very tasty. It’s made of meat and various vegetables.
You absolutely need to taste the “Ćevapcici” (Ćevapčiči), made of meat. It’s more delicious with cheese.
Cakes to taste? All of them. Though, the Baklava is luscious.
